![]() | Liam to make his overseas racing debut in Spain Liam McMillan will make his overseas racing debut on September 22nd, and instead of doing it quietly at a small circuit he will race on the Spanish Grand Prix track near Barcelona in a support race to the DTM in front of an expected 80,000 spectators! Not only that, at just 17 years and 204 days Liam will be one of the youngest drivers ever to contest a round of the Spanish SEAT Supercopa series (since the series started in 2002, only one Spanish driver, Miguel Gallego, has been younger). Up to 44 New SEAT Leon Cupras are expected to gather at the famous Circuit de Catalunya for the three Supercopa races. One race will be held on Saturday 22nd September, while two races take place the following day. Sunday’s race programme in particular will be completely different to anything Liam has experienced before, as the first race of the day will be a normal starting start and after the chequered flag the cars will remain on the grid and line up for the second race, which will begin with a rolling start. Liam will race the same Maxtreme-prepared SEAT Leon Cupra in which he races in the Blaupunkt SEAT Cupra Championship (the UK version of the Supercopa series). The young driver from Wisbech near Peterborough won’t be a lone Brit abroad, as he’ll be teaming up with Tom Boardman. The 23-year old driver from Forton in Lancashire was the SEAT Cupra Champion in 2005 and has since raced in the Spanish Supercopa – finishing 3rd overall last year. Liam and Tom will run together in the Triple R racing team. Liam will follow in the footsteps of former Formula 1 drivers Johnny Herbert and Mauro Baldi, former SEAT Cupra Champion and now Chevrolet WTCC driver Rob Huff, Dakar Rally winner Nani Roma, World Superbike rider Fonsi Nieto and MotoGP racer Toni Elías who have all made their SEAT Supercopa race debuts at the Circuit de Catalunya. Liam said: “It’s going to be a fantastic experience, and I’m really looking forward to racing on a new track, in unfamiliar conditions and against drivers who I’ve never raced against before. I’ll have a chance to learn the circuit during testing on Friday, and then it will be straight into qualifying and three races. It’s very much a case of in at the deep end, but with Tom’s help, a team who has a lot of experience in the Supercopa series and a date which doesn’t clash with my racing commitments in the UK, it’s too good an opportunity to miss.” |
